Hopi Salt Trail to the Little Colorado River
Known as just The Little Colorado, this journey is not a trail, but more of a route-finding adventure. Do not be fooled, this destination is NOT for beginners, or anyone with physical limitations. The route involves a lot of bouldering and Class 4 Climbing. (Class 4 is considered simple climbing using hands and legs, often exposed.) This can be fatal. Hike at your own risk!
Permits must be obtained in advance from the Navajo Nation. Keep in mind, when someone needs help or rescue. it takes volunteer tribe members about six hours to arrive to even begin to help you.
The first half mile into the canyon is extremely steep, and requires climbing through a boulder field. You must also be aware of loose dirt and rocks.
The total miles out and back is more than what you are told on most websites; about 11 miles to complete.
Practice leave no trace, meaning leave the area better than you find it. Pack out what you pack in, including all garbage.
I contemplated the Little Colorado River hike for the longest time. I kept saying I don’t need to see and feel every part of this earth. I kept thinking this is a very hard hike for me. The five + miles down are too risky. It is very hard to get down with the steep inclination, loose dirt and rocks and the boulders. I backpacked, carried 5 -6 liters of water, a super light tent, sleeping pad, headlamps, flashlight enough food for three meals, snacks electrolytes and a water filter. No change of clothes.
My first time was a last minute invite and I had to quickly say yes or no. I found myself saying yes without even thinking. I had been inactive for almost two weeks due to an illness that I was recovering from, but I said yes. I don’t have many photos to detail the trail, but believe me this is extreme. People get badly injured here every year.
I am in love with this place called Earth, and the Little Colorado means so much to me. The universe was watching over me. I am thankful for the given opportunities. #soyazul #lifeisshort #liveitwell
