Hanging Gardens
Hanging Gardens is a strenuous hike within the West Clear Creek Wilderness. This hike is roughly 4 miles out-and-back and involves just over 1,000ft of elevation gain. You will be boulder hopping and swimming in deep waters in order to reach the final grand view. Make sure you bring lots of water.
The hike down into the canyon is very sharp and steep, but is less than a mile. Within the canyon, it is possible to sometimes stay dry but you must navigate fallen trees and large boulders. Most of these boulders are worn smooth by erosion so be extremely careful in this section. There are several shallow areas where the rocks are very slippery as well.
Many sections require you to swim and navigate deep waters. Large boulders await your knees as you swim so be careful. (It is advisable to bring a life vest and be a strong swimmer.) The final reward for such an arduous hike are the hanging gardens, an oasis of green that seems out of place in Arizona. Relax and enjoy the view and the cool waters but be prepared for the long, hot hike back to your vehicle.
Be advised, the road leading to the trailhead requires a high clearance vehicle and begins at the end of the Cash Tank Trail..
Please practice Leave no trace, meaning pack out what you pack in, especially garbage and waste. Also, be advised, this hike is remote and strenuous so be extremely cautious. A wearable GPS device is also advised.
